Check out our solar car project:

Our goal was for students to gain an understanding of solar power and the use of photovoltaic cells.  In order to meet our objective the 8th grade students were given instruction in class through videos, classroom discussion, reading, and analysis.  Then they were able to put their knowledge to use by building and testing their own solar cars; making adjustments where needed.  These 8th grade students then applied their knowledge to a project of their own design to teach the 2nd graders about solar power and photovoltaic cells.

Two classes of 8th graders and two classes of 2nd graders teamed up for ½ a day to put their knowledge to use.  The 8th graders were able to reinforce their learning by having to teach it to the 2nd graders.  Then they worked together to build, design and test their solar cars.  This project met our objectives and exceeded our expectations.  Students gained an understating of sustainable energy by using STEM based activities, and worked together as a community to increase their knowledge.
